| Red Locations: Areas to Avoid During Mar 12-14 | ||||||||||||

Hundreds of thousands of anti-government red-shirt protesters are expected to travel to Bangkok to hold a mass rally with one common objective, to topple the Abhisit Vejjajiva government. The red-shirt protesters will be making their ways from various provinces and eventually congregate at various key areas in Bangkok. They hope to arrive in the capital on Sunday, March 14, 2010. Fearing chaos and civil unrest, authorities have beefed up security at numerous locations throughout Bangkok and its vicinities. Checkpoints will be set up by police officers at their respective jurisdictions. Special measures have also been employed at the perimeters of key protest sites where vehicles and persons will be searched for weapons and other dangerous devices. The following are the key areas the red-shirt protesters are expected to gather on March 14. The public have been encouraged to avoid the following areas; 1. Wongwian Yai, Thon Buri: The gathering at Wongwian Yai will be led by the Taksin-Thon Buri group, headed by core red-shirt leader Jatuporn Promphan. They will conduct religious rites at Wongwian Yai and carry out mobile protests on main roads around the area including; Petchakasem road, Tha Prah-Bang Kae intersection, Somdet Phra Chao Taksin road, Rama II road, Itsaraphap road, Chaoroen Nakhon road and Charan Sanitwong. 2. The Fifth Constitution Monument: The red-shirts will gather above the underground pass at the Bang Khen Intersection. The group of anti-government protesters will be led by key red-shirt leader Veera Musikkapong. They are planning to also conduct religious rites and hold mobile rallies on Ramindra road, Paholyothin road near the Kaset-Saphan Mai-Don Muang intersection). 3. Rama VI Monument at Lumpini Park: Red-shirt protesters from Sathon, Bangrak, Patumwan, Bang Koh Laem and Yannawa areas will gather at this location. They'll also march and carry out demonstrations on nearby main roads including Silom road, Sathon road and Rama IV road. 4. Gate 2 of Bangkok Youth Center (Thai-Japan) on Mit Maitri road: This area has been designated as the rally site for protesters from Huay Kwang, Rama IX, Asok, Bang Sue, Bang Po and Taxi Community Radio station. They will hold mobile rallies on Din Daeng road, Din Daeng Intersection, Victory Monument, Vibhavadi Rangsit road (outbound), TV Channel 11 and Battalion Infantryman 1st Place Guard Division. |
