Rice Export Still in Favorable Trend

The Commerce Ministry has disclosed that domestic and export rice prices are seeing positive trends. However, the ministry has revealed that rice exports for the last eight months has been lower than last year due to various factors. Internal Trade Department Director General Wacharee Wimuktayon stated that the rice market is doing well with constant demand from abroad.
FTI to Promote Eco-friendly Industries

PTT will proceed with its 24 out of 25 projects in the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate following the court verdict. Meanwhile, the Federation of Thai Industries will move ahead with its efforts to promote the eco-friendly industries. Federation of Thai Industries, or FTI, Chairman Phayungsak Chartsutthiphol said foreign investor confidence has significantly improved following the Administrative Court's ruling that allowed all but two industrial projects at Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate, suspended since last year, to move ahead.

Speculations have emerged among stockbrokers that the Thai stock index will hit 1,000 points at the year-end with a bunch of supporting factors. President of Kim Eng Securities, Montri Sornpaisarn, affirmed that the Thai economy and stock market are performing excellently. Thailand's leading supermarket chain voices its support to the government's price ceiling for bottled drinking water to help consumers in the current sluggish economy. Jiranan Pupat, assistant senior managing director for purchasing and marketing of Central Food Retail Company, operator of Central Food Hall and Tops Supermarket, said her company has complied with the government's policy to cap the price of bottled drinking water at no more than seven baht for a 500- to 600-CC bottle and 14 baht for a 1500-CC bottle.

The Export-Import Bank of Thailand has asked exporters not to speculate on the baht's appreciation. Instead, he suggested that they take advantage of the strong baht by purchasing new machines and technology to increase their competitiveness. Chairman of the Export-Import Bank of Thailand, or EXIM Bank, Board Naris Chaisutra said the recent appreciation of the Baht is likely caused by two main factors which are a significant foreign capital inflow into the Thai stock and securities markets, and an uptrend in interest rates.

The private sector has expressed satisfaction with the Central Administrative Court's decision in the Map Ta Phut case, as it will help restore confidence among investors. Speaking after the meeting of the Joint Standing Committee of Commerce, Industry and Banking yesterday, Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, or TCC, Dusit Nontanakorn said the private sector agrees with the Central Administrative Court's ruling in the Map Ta Phut case that allowed all but two industrial projects to resume normal operations.

The Commerce Ministry is happy with full co-operation of vendors in selling drinking water and foods at recommended prices. Following the Commerce Ministry's announcement of new recommended prices for drinking water, effective since September 1, Internal Trade Department Director General Vatcharee Vimuktayon stated that she has visited several food courts to ensure drinking water is being sold at the fixed prices.
